Bicester Military Railway (50-mins) (DVD) Bicester Military Railway (50-mins) (DVD) (Stock Code TR807D)

Loose coupled freight trains with their distinctive clatter and the daily local 'pick up' freight train, are now sadly a thing of the past - at least as far as British Rail is concerned. However, there is one complete railway system which still handles huge amounts of traffic in this traditional manner:- the Bicester Military Railway.

This unique video gives a rare and privileged insight into the day to day operations of one of the countries largest industrial railways. The fascinating and busy Central Ordinance Depot, which is not generally open to the public, still uses an extensive standard gauge railway for the vast majority of it's internal movements between the various storehouses.

Each day sees an enormous amount of individual movements and marshalling operations. As well as internal traffic flows, featuring many unique and interesting wagon variants no longer found on main line systems, the railway also handles significant amounts of main line traffic through it's connection to British Rail.

This superbly made programme also deals with MOD main line traffic since the demise of Speedlink and there's a visit to the Museum of Army Transport at Beverley, Yorkshire, to look at some other unusual relics used by both MOD and the Army. Not forgetting a close look at the immaculate locomotive fleet at Bicester, a cab ride around the extensive site, and a close look at marshalling operations featuring loose shunting and 'pick up' freights.

This exciting programme allows the viewer to explore all aspects of Britain's biggest military railway, which was originally built during 1941. Also included are many interesting interviews, not least, the reminiscences of Ernest Lawton, co-author of the recently published book about the railway, who was a driver at the Bicester Military Railway during the Second World War.

This video is an essential companion to Earnest Lawton's fascinating historical book and is certain to please anyone with an interest in Britain's military railways.

Longtown Military Railway (50-mins) (DVD) Longtown Military Railway (50-mins) (DVD) (Stock Code TR818D)

Like our first look at the Bicester Military Railway, this is a unique chance to go 'behind the scenes' in an area that is definitely out of bounds to visitors. The Base Ammunition Depot at Longtown near Carlisle, which is connected to the west coast main line by a lengthy spur that once ran on to the Waverley route, has a very interesting and colourful history. Behind the high security perimeter fences is a very extensive military system that is not normally open to visitors. All internal shunting is carried out by five Vanguard locomotives built by Thomas Hill between 1977 and 1982. Also on the stock list are two Baguley-Drewry railcars built in the 1970s, which are still used to carry personnel around the depot today.

The main Longtown depot is connected to a separate storage site at nearby Smalmstown, by means of a short link over British Rail metals. This involves tracing part of a spur that once linked the Waverley route with the West Coast main line at Gretna and which closed to through traffic 1969. Part of this spur also forms the main rail access route into the Longtown depot, but despite the fact that it only carries MOD traffic, it is still owned and maintained by BR.

As well as current day operations at Longtown, Eastriggs just across the border in Scotland, which also comes under the control of Longtown BAD, is thoroughly explored. In particular, we look at the unusual narrow gauge system and transfer facilities at Eastriggs. Also included are interviews with the Longtown Commandant and other members of the railway operating staff.

As Britain began to emerge from the austerity of the post war years many ordinary people, had for the first time ever, enough spare cash to buy a cine camera. This was still somewhat of a luxury though, as cine film throughout the 1950s and 1960s was, by today's home video standards, very expensive.

Thousands of families began to film their holidays, outings, and those more memorable family occasions. While others also took the opportunity to film more commonplace everyday activities including children playing in the street, local fetes or a visit to town.

Television was not the dominant force it is today, and after the ritual of setting up the projector and screen many happy evenings would be spent watching the results in a darkened room at home.

Carefully and sensitively crafted together by North West Video Productions this first volume, in a unique series, forms a fascinating and lively look back at the 1950s and 60s. This is definitely not the official Britain of the newsreels or commercial cinema, but a warm and poignant account of everyday events filmed by ordinary people - showing what life was really like during the post war years.

This unique programme, made entirely from original cine films complete with discreet sound effects and music, is complimented by a thought provoking script written and introduced by Neil Patrick - Editor of Yours magazine.

You'll find the memories come flooding back as we focus on a huge variety of topics including:-

Children - at school and at play, long before the days of leisure wear and trainers. With so few cars and lorries around children were safe to play in the street, where the only distractions were the milkman and his horse, or the chimes from a distinctive ice cream van.

Street Scenes - lots of contrasting views, from small villages to large towns - highlighting shops, passing traffic and fashions.

Everyday life - including wine making, summer fetes and Christmas - always the main family event in any year but just look at those fashions and the presents.

Transport - lots of everyday scenes including a steam train journey from Leamington Spa to Birmingham, trolley buses at Walsall, and Glasgow's distinctive trams.

Royal Visits - a memorable day with Royal visits to Rugeley & Barmouth.

Holidays - when overseas package holidays were virtually unknown! Lots of nostalgic scenes in the West Country, including camping and caravan holidays, picnics and visits to St Ives, Lands End, and Lynton & Lynmouth. Also holidays on the Isle of Wight featuring the famous pier, and the first road round-a-bout on the Island.

Farming - before giant machines took over most duties there were still some horses and early tractors at work, while the farmyards provided a haven for children to play in.

Family motoring - for the lucky few a new car meant extra freedom - although many early roads were already starting to jam up. Never mind though there was still plenty of room on the newly opened M6 & M1 motorways!

If you are old enough to remember the 1950s and 60s this unique video will rekindle many pleasant memories. If you're too young to remember those exciting years, this programme will give you an excellent impression of just what you missed !

For over a century the freight engine was the everyday work horse of the railways – often expected to slog away with a minimum of maintenance and a heavy load.

This latest title helps to redress the balance by taking a nostalgic look at some of the most enduring freight classes including Great Western 2800s, Robinson 04s, Q6s, J27s, J37s, J38s, J39s and 4Fs.

Today's railfans may have to travel as far as China or Cuba in search of steam - but not so long ago things were very different.

As far as the majority of rail enthusiasts in the UK were concerned, when English steam finished during August 1968 - their hobby was effectively dead. Few people in those days had the money, time or the knowledge to travel the world in search of steam, and of course many British fans were notoriously blinkered claiming to be "only interested in UK steam anyway".

Fortunately a few railfans had the foresight to record the passing steam railway heritage overseas as well as at home, and it's thanks entirely to their efforts that we can all now enjoy some of the finest lineside action to be seen anywhere in the world. With well over 500 locos built, the Class 47 or the Brush - Sulzer Type 4, as they were known when first constructed, are by far the largest numbered class of BR main line locomotive.

This superbly photographed and produced programme traces the history of this most widely travelled and utilised of all BR classes. Introduced over 30 years ago, these powerful and versatile locomotives have had a long and colourful career. However the early examples were not initially universally welcomed by rail enthusiasts as they certainly hastened the final demise of BR steam!

Traffic flows include oil, automotive, civil link, parcels, RFD, and passenger services. There's also an exciting cab ride on a 47/9.

Ever since the days of steam traction different designs of rail locomotives have been classified into working groups - usually taking into account a combination of variables such as their wheel arrangement and power ratings. Probably the best known of these modern groupings are the Type 5 Freight Locomotives which comprise Class 56, 58, 59 & 60. These distinctly different looking locomotives are all expected to perform similar work:- pulling some of the heaviest rail freight trains on British Rail today.

Made with the full co-operation of BR and Foster Yeoman, this informative programme takes a close look at each class of Type 5 locomotive. The comprehensive script, initially traces the history of each class before clarifying some of the more fundamental technical details. While the unrivalled photography and direction provides an indispensable contemporary guide to the best 'hot spots' where each class can be seen at work today.

Marchwood & Chilmark Military Railways (50-mins) (DVD) Marchwood & Chilmark Military Railways (50-mins) (DVD) (Stock Code TR827D)

On one special tape, TWO complete programmes contrasting the different MOD railway operations at Chilmark, near Salisbury and Marchwood, near Southampton.

RAF Chilmark was a unique ammunition supply depot secretively situated in the beautiful Wiltshire countryside. This video traces the work of this interesting and unique depot during the spring of 1994 when supplies were being transferred to the Nato depot at Glen Douglas in Scotland, prior to the complete closure of Chilmark during 1995. Featured site movements include both standard and narrow gauge locomotives at Chilmark and Dinton as well as the unique narrow gauge railway from the privately owned Chilmark Stone Company Mine situated within the RAF site. As well as pertinent interviews, this programme also features rare archive photographs and one of the unusual underground electric locomotives in operation. The line is connected by a four mile spur from Chilmark to the BR connection at Dinton which utilizes part of the old double track main line from Exeter to Salisbury.

Marchwood MOD base is an extremely busy location that handles the import and export of a vast variety of goods for the MOD. These can range literally from stationery supplies through to tanks. The base which is connected to the main BR line which still runs to Fawley is operated entirely by standard gauge MOD vanguard locomotives. It also includes its own private harbour where goods are loaded onto waiting ships. Very unusually, Marchwood is busy enough to justify its own passenger service, which is featured along with BR movements onto the site.

    Passenger Action! Vol.1 - Private Operators (55-mins) () Passenger Action! Vol.1 - Private Operators (55-mins) () (Stock Code TR787D)

By March 31st 1997 the last BR passenger train operating company had been sold and with it came the end of British Rail's passenger operations. The integrated passenger network which was formed through the nationalisation of the nation' railways in 1948 had lasted for nearly fifty years before privatisation took its final toll. This superb programme takes a representative look at the new private companies' operations throughout the British Isles in summer 1997. As well as looking at some of the striking new passenger liveries, this programme also takes a look at press criticism concerning reliabilty and ticketing. With over sixty minutes of solid passenger action featuring many different classes, this new programme is a must for all connoisseurs of the current passenger scene.

Vanish World Steam 7 - The Greatest Show on Earth (China 2) (90-mins) () Vanish World Steam 7 - The Greatest Show on Earth (China 2) (90-mins) () (Stock Code TR743D)

Once again the Tele Rail crew head for China to record the final chapters of The Greatest Show on Earth. This time there's spectacular narrow gauge winter steam action from Zhane, 320 kilometres north of Harbin in Northern China, where the team were the first professional Western film crew to make the lengthy journey deep into the isolated forests - right on the Russian border - to see logging operation.

There's a new look at some favourite lines, including Chengde, situated 250 km north of Beijing. This hilly area - which is famous for the emperor's summer palace - is the unlikely setting for one of China's most spectacular steelworks railways. Each day a small fleet of SY 2-8-2s and JS 2-8-2s battle to carry coal up the steep branch where it's normal practice to employ three locos on each short train. There's also a unique visit to the steelworks which is normally out of bounds.

There's more stunning winter sights on the Shenmu local railway with huge coal trains around Dongsheng. Not forgetting awesome action in prefect winter weather, on the Ji-Tong line which has become famous for it's beautiful scenery and the impressive Jingpeng pass.

    Vanish World Steam Vol.6 - Extreme Steam (55-mins) () Vanish World Steam Vol.6 - Extreme Steam (55-mins) () (Stock Code TR768D)

At the start of the 21st century, China is the only country in the world, that is able to offer any serious volume of steam traction, and in this unique programme we highlight the splendid action still to be seen during the extreme winter weather.

Main line express passenger steam officially finished in China in October 1999, and we mark this sad milestone by taking a brief glimpse of the Fuxin to Jinzhou service.

There's also a look at the Baotou Dong JS fleet which worked some of the last regular steam passenger suburban services around Baotou, and the Shiguai branch which winds for 38 kilometres north east of Baotou.

We feature tremendous steam action on the Baotou to Shenmu line which was completed in 1994 to service the coal mines opened to the south of Dongsheng, and is not run by China Rail, but is operated as an independent ‘local line’. The highlight of this 100% steam line, are double headed QJs assisted by a third QJ banking.

There's also a return visit to the unequalled Jinpeng area on the Tonglio to Jining line - another provincial 100% steam outpost. This time we concentrate on the western side of the Jinpeng pass, including an atmospheric footplate ride on the first loco of a pair of QJs as they work a heavy freight over the mountainous route.

In total, contrast we take a first look at some unique surviving narrow gauge steam routes in the far North of China, including the forestry lines of Yabuli and the nearby line from Weihe, which even boasts a regular steam hauled narrow gauge passenger service

One European steam route that doesn't need to operate preserved steam is based at Wolstzyn in Poland. Quite incredibly this part of the standard gauge Polish state network, with its pocket of intense daily steam activity, has continued to work right up to the present day. Using locomotives based at the splendid quarter roundhouse at Wolstzyn, the secondary main lines to Poznan, and Leszno feature the last regular standard gauge steam running in Europe. Some people mistakenly assume this is a tourist style preserved operation. In fact nothing could be further from the truth. While Steam Railway readers have benefited from special charter trains, the vast majority of movements are scheduled services solely for the benefit of fare paying locals. Filmed in Winter, Spring & Autumn 1996, this superb video contains all new material and features:- Action in and around the famous shed at Wolstzyn. Local pick up freights at Grodzisk, Kargowa & Konotop. Cab rides.

Spectacular secondary main line steam passenger action on the lines to Poznan, Zbaszynek and Leszno.

A look at the fascinating narrow gauge line at Sroda.

    Vanishing World of Steam Vol.03 - Cuba (55-mins) () Vanishing World of Steam Vol.03 - Cuba (55-mins) () (Stock Code TR794D)

Still officially a closed communist country, at least as far as citizens of the USA are concerned, Cuba has much to offer the serious connoisseur of working steam. During the comparatively short sugar season an incredible variety of vintage steam locomotives are pressed into daily service with predominantly American designed locos from both Alco and Baldwin being the most common types, as well as a handful of European examples in use. The huge variety of sugar cane mills on the island, most of which are standard gauge but also include 2' 3", 2' 6", & 3' 0" examples, have become a magnet for many resourceful rail fans during recent years. The majority use oil fired locos which are renowned for producing particularly dense smoke, but there are a few coal fired locos sometimes to be seen in service. The island features lots of delightful Spanish timbered colonial style building and is also well known as the final resting place for many vintage USA and British cars which are still pressed into every day service. Despite severe economic pressures many mills are back in full production and part one of this unique programme highlights action from many of the most scenic and interesting mills including:- 207 Gregorio Arlee Mañalich, 211 Rubén Martínez Villena, 212 Boris Luis Santa Coloma, 303 Australia, 306 Cuba Libre, 403 Mal Tiempo, 405 Luis Arcos Bergnes, 418 Obduilo Morales, 428 Marcelo Salado, 440 Ifrain Alfonso, 448 Simón Bolívar, 503 Orlando Gaozález Ramirez.

No prizes for guessing that this video features China! - With around four thousand steam locos still working in 1998, China remains the only major country in the world still using any serious volume of steam power for every day use. Shot during 1997 and 1998 this video with it's informative script is band up to date, with unparalleled winter steam action including:- Yebaishou. A return to this highly acclaimed area featuring what is likely to be some of the last steam action from this popular location.

Xilin. Narrow gauge action along an interesting rural line worked by PT4s - also the Yexi stone railway in Beijing. Mulling . Passenger action around the giant horse shoe between Mundanjiang and Muling.

Tumen . Steam close to the border with Korea highlighting the famous Xingxing spiral. Jinpeng Pass

The superb Tongliao - Jining line featuring winter action on the now famous Jinpeng pass as well as a visit to Daban depot. This 'provincial line' which is not part of China has sprung to prominence in recent years as it is still one hundred percent steam operated with semaphore signals and in addition, passes through some spectacular mountainous areas. Most of the traffic is freight worked by ex China Rail QJs - although the alternate day passenger service in this remote part of Inner Mongolia is also featured. With so much stunning action, this video provides one of the most up to date opportunities to view working steam in the last few years of this century.

    Vanishing World Steam Vol.05 - Cuba 2 (55-mins) () Vanishing World Steam Vol.05 - Cuba 2 (55-mins) () (Stock Code TR774D)

Our return visit to Cuba highlights many important mills not featured in part one. Faced with the collapse of the Soviet trading block, the US trade embargo and strained relations with Latin America, hard currency from any source is critical for Cuba. Although to a ceratin extent, sugar's dominance as the primary source of foreign currency earnings, has been overtaken by Tourism, the annual sugar crop is still very important particularly in rural areas where most jobs rely directly or indirectly on sugar.

Castro's already well into his seventies, and it's impossible to predict what will happen when he dies. Some speculate anarchy, mayhem and chaos, while others foresee an ordered but gradual change to capitalism. One thing is for certain - any political changes will affect the sugar industry - and the steam railways of Cuba dramatically. The ancient and labour intensive steam locos featured in these two volumes could soon become a thing of the past as they are replaced by fleets of newly imported diesels - or even lorries - serving a much modernised and streamlined industry. Sugar is grown in nearly all parts of Cuba, although the actual harvest time varies considerably. This last mill featured in this excellent programme spotlights Rafael Freyre - the most scenically attractive of Cuba's sugar lines which is always amongst the last to harvest. Mills featured include:- 105 Augusto César Sandino, 107 Pablo de la Torriente Brau, 315 José Smith Comas, 314 Jesús Rabí, 319 René Fraga, 413 Espartaco, 424 Primero de mayo, 409 Antonio Sánchez, 443 Pepito Tey, 515 Ciro Redondo, 522 Venezuela, 504 Ecuador, 520 Noel Fernández & 635 Rafael Freyre
